Invertebrates are amazing, and despite living in an urban setting, there's established themselves quite well here and play a vital role in the health of our local ecology. BEES: Different types of bees call Brooklyn their home, with the Bumble Bee being the most popular one. You can learn more about the native bees of Brooklyn here: https://www.brooklyngreenway.org/meet-the-native-bees-of.../
EARTHWORMS: While you may not see them out of the ground until it rains, each and every day there are thousands of Earthworms busily working underground. They keep our soil healthy by breaking down leaves, twigs, and other organic materials. MUSSELS: Found in along the marshes and coastlines of NYC, mussels are directly responsible for improving the water quality and health along the marsh and estuary ecosystems. Mussels are an abundant food source for local wildlife and people. DRAGONFLIES and DAMSELFLIES: Found near ponds, streams, and other calm waters, Dragonflies and Damselflies are natural predators of mosquitoes and other small insects. They help control the mosquito population and keep aquatic environments healthy. Did you see any cool invertebrates today? Comments are closed.
