What will you grow this year? We hope you're excited for the return of the annual Kiddie Science Plant Sale Fundraiser! Proceeds from this fundraiser directly benefit our growing efforts which last year exceeded 69 pounds of harvested food!
Plant orders are processed online and picked up at the Kiddie Science Lab. Below is what's available this year. Happy growing! **THE 2022 PLANT SALE IS SOLD OUT!!** COSMOS "WIZARD" Compact plants that have very colorful, medium-size leaves. This type of cosmos also works well indoors. Low-maintenance, uniform and basal-branching plants are late flowering, extending their landscape value. Especially suited to full sun or partial shade, with outstanding heat and humidity tolerance. DILL Does well in the full sun or part shade. Sometimes it’s called dill weed because it comes back in the herb garden if the seeds from the previous year have fallen to the ground. Harvesting the dill weed tops just before the flower opens gives you the best flavor. COLLARDS "CHAMPION" Champion is a type selected for its longer standing ability. The plants are short stemmed with thick leaves, and they tend to be more vigorous with a higher yield potential. Champion has good winter hardiness. SWISS CHARD These brilliantly-colored stems are so beautiful that you may forget to harvest the succulent, sweet leaves! Electric yellows, pinks, crimsons, oranges, purples, whites, and greens festoon the 20-inch stems. Many keep their color even after cooking, and all are delightfully festive. Performs well in cool or mild weather. Cut at any stage and new leaves will grow. ZUCCHINI "ELITE" The standard for medium green zucchini. An extra-early hybrid with a classic cylindrical shape, Elite’s slim fruit have a lustrous sheen and are best when picked at 7-8" in length. Its open plant makes picking easy, and the yields are incredible. -------------------------------------------------------------------- TOMATO "SWEET 100 CHERRY" SOLD OUT This large plant yields an incredible number of the best tasting bite-sized cherry tomatoes! They’re produced in grape-like clusters, bear all season long, and get high praise for their sweetness. CUCUMBERS "MARKETMORE" SOLD OUT This uniformly dark green beauty holds its shape and quality through several picks. Solid reputation as a dependable open-pollinated slicer. These are the "Marketmore" variety. BASIL "SWEET GENEVA" SOLD OUT This popular strain has large, dark green leaves with a pleasant sweet flavor, and is used for flavoring many foods, especially tomatoes and peas. Both leaves and flowers are also used fresh or dried in salads. A great choice for pesto; plants grow to about 2 ft. high. IMPATIENS (BEACON SERIES) SOLD OUT The Beacon series of Impatiens has been bred, tested, and confirmed for high resistance to currently known populations of Plasmopara obducens, which cause Impatiens Downy Mildew. Impatiens are a great colorful option for the shade. Will grow 10-12” high, spaced at 12-14” apart. Comes in a mix of red, pink, white, purple, and/or orange flowers. We've received a lot of questions about where our chickens live and what their housing set-up is like so we made a video to help provide answers! Thanks to generous support from the Roehr Family Foundation, our chickens have fantastic accommodations which provide a unique learning opportunity for our young scientists. Check out the video below to learn more. Have a chicken question? Send it to us at KiddieScience@gmail.com The new growing season is being welcomed in by new raised garden beds! Our old garden beds were removed and new garden beds were custom built in their place. Modifications have been made to ensure more efficient growing. In addition to the front garden area, we added two new garden beds in the backyard too! This is before: This is after. We can't wait to learn and grow with you!
Two years ago we made the unexpected decision to pause in-person programming at the Lab for what we thought would be just a few weeks. It would be nineteen months before we would reopen our doors to limited in-person programming. Less than a year into our reopening, we are still phasing in programming and slowly increasing our group size.
Through it all, our science families and supportive community have been instrumental at ensuring the Lab remains a safe and encouraging environment for all our young scientists. I want to personally thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation at helping to keep us safely in business as we continue to navigate our current pandemic. For eight years and counting, Kiddie Science has prided itself in serving a widely diverse population of thousands of families. Science is for everyone, and we are firmly committed to creating and promoting an environment that is safe and inclusive of the needs of our partner educators, our young scientists, and families. For the foreseeable future, masks will continue to be required at the Lab. On behalf of our partner educators, the Kiddie Science Board of Directors, and our families, I want to thank you for your continued assistance at ensuring the Lab remains a safe place for all young scientists. Cheers to science! ~ Ms. Carmen |
