We kicked off 2023 by providing more resources to our community! Thanks to NYC Health+Hospitals and a community member, we were able to access more PPE and related free resources to share with our neighbors.
We began at noon with free books from the Brooklyn Book Bodega and 25 fully loaded bags which included Lysol wipes, antibacterial hand wipes, face masks, and several boxes of Covid tests. Once again, it took less than an hour for resources to be dispersed. It was wonderful seeing neighbors and friends as you stopped by. We look forward to continuing to provide access to the resources we need. This is our second distribution, and to date, we have distributed the following: 36 large canisters of hand sanitizing wipes 72 large canisters of surface disinfecting wipes 2,000 surgical masks 808 Covid tests (2 tests per box) It began with a donation of 750 books back in May 2020. While the world was shutting down due to Covid, the Brooklyn Book Bodega was just getting started on their mission to increase accessibility and ownership of books.
Over the years, they've continued providing Kiddie Science, and thus our community, with access to thousands of books for age 12 and under. At first, we hosted book swaps in front gated area, which then grew to events on the public sidewalk. Ultimately, thanks to grants and the support of donors, we established a Little Free Library right outside the Lab which holds an assortment of free books. On any given day, you can find board books, early readers, picture books, young adult novels, popular titles, and much more! While joyous, maintaining our Library hasn't always been easy. Inclement weather once blew the doors right off, breaking one of them. With hundred of hands opening and closing the doors, the latch broke and has needed ongoing maintenance. The volume of books our Library holds ultimately caused sagging, which meant we did some creative troubleshooting to provide structural support. Our local community and ongoing support from the Brooklyn Book Bodega means our Library is always well stocked. We often enjoy overhearing the squeals of joy as a young reader finds the perfect books. Of course, the popularity of the Library means we're looking at making upgrades and replacements this spring to make it event better. We hope you can support the ongoing care and keeping of the Kiddie Science Lab Little Free Library with a tax deductible donation via Venmo, Paypal, or Zelle: @kiddiescience or kiddiescience@gmail.com It was a celebration for the books! Thank you for joining us for the first annual Back To School Sidewalk Party! A few months ago this was a simple idea that was wholeheartedly supported by Assembly Member Brian Cunningham and his amazing staff. It was fantastic to see this idea come to life and be able to connect with our community in a whole new way! It took many hands and loving hearts to create such an overwhelmingly successful event! Many special thanks to our volunteers, many of whom we met for the first time that day. We appreciate your time and assistance! Our event sponsors and supporters were the backbone of this event and we are forever grateful for their time and contributions. The selfless generosities gifted to our community is a reminder of the good we can, and must do, every opportunity we get. On behalf of the community we proudly serve, thank you! We do it again next year :)
