Engineering Club News: Working with Clay

4/24/2016

A portion of our engineering exploration involved the use of various materials. One of these materials was clay. We explored various clay homes then designed a plan to build our own. Each young engineer built a clay home of their own based on specific criteria: the home had to have a roof, a door or window, and had to stand upright. After exploring how to work with the clay, our young engineers got to work.

Engineering Club News: Structures & Homes

Prior to our exploration on homes and buildings, our young scientists learned about structures. We explored the strength of various structures, and specifically focused on the power of the triangle. Using toothpicks and gumdrop candies, our young engineers had the challenge of designing a structure that could stand tall and bear some weight.

As part of the engineering process, our young engineers learned about blueprints and the role they play in helping plan what a structure will look like. After looking at several actual blueprints, we designed our own based on either a real or imagined home. Thanks to the generosity of individual donors, our young engineers are able to use their blueprints to guide their home design using Lego bricks.

The Kiddie Science Engineering Club is 100% funded through monetary and in-kind donations from supporters just like you. Thank you!

Engineering Club News: Cars

3/28/2016

What's not to love about cars? Our young engineers have been learning about about simple machines, which led us to an exploration of the wheel and axle. We explored the first basic cars, race cars, fancy collectible cars, and even the Mars rover. We then moved onto building our own mini wooden race cars.

Thanks to individual donors just like you, our young engineers have access to enough K'Nex sets for them each to build their own cars. We tested how the vehicles held up overall, how they turned the corner, and how fast we were able to push them.

You can check out a video of our young engineers in action here.

Engineering Club News

1/28/2016

Thanks to the amazing support of individual donors, the Kiddie Science Engineering Club kicked off a few weeks ago at the Flatbush Beacon Center! We've begun or exploration by discussing what engineering is and what engineers do. We built simple machines and have begun exploring things that fly. During this inaugural 6-week session, our goal is to explore how homes are built, learn about types of homes from around the world, and ultimately build a model home of our own. We look forward to sharing with you where our exploration takes us.
