Engineering is the science of creating, inventing, or designing something that addresses a problem or otherwise makes life easier for us. Through engineering, we can explore a problem through a creative lens and create that which we imagine. Below are some simple ways you and your young scientist can explore science together through engineering. BASIC MATERIALS: Gumdrops (or small marshmallows), toothpicks. Optional: skewers EXPERIMENT #1: 3D SHAPES Using gumdrops (or marshmallows) and toothpicks (or skewers), create basic shapes then build them into 3-dimensional shapes that can double as tree ornaments. EXPERIMENT #2: GUMDROP CHRISTMAS TREES Use green gumdrops and toothpicks to create your very own gumdrop Christmas tree. We recommend creating a wide triangle base and building upward while making the triangle smaller. Top your gumdrop Christmas tree with a colorful gumdrop. EXPERIMENT #3: BUILDING CHALLENGES For the first challenge you'll use 5 toothpicks and 10 gumdrops to create the tallest tower that doesn't fall over. For the second challenge, use 10 toothpicks and 20 gumdrops to create a stable structure. Did you try this experiment at home?
