Dirt & Worm Exploration

4/15/2025

Dirt is more than just dirt—it’s a living, breathing world beneath our feet. Soil is home to tiny organisms that break down organic material, create nutrients for plants, and keep ecosystems healthy. One of the best ways to explore this hidden world is by digging in and taking a closer look.
Collect a soil sample in a cup. Observe its color, texture, and smell. Is it dry and crumbly or moist and sticky? Look closely for tiny creatures like worms, beetles, or ants. These decomposers help break down dead leaves and turn them into nutrients that plants can use.

Try a simple soil squeeze test
If the soil falls apart when you open your hand, it’s dry. If it stays in a loose clump, it has a good balance of moisture. If it feels sticky or muddy, it holds a lot of water. Different plants thrive in different soil types, and healthy soil means a thriving environment.

Take your exploration further
Start a mini compost experiment. Collect food scraps like vegetable peels or coffee grounds and mix them with soil in a small container. Observe how they break down over time and notice the role that worms and microbes play.

Soil is the foundation of life on Earth, yet many people never stop to think about what’s beneath their feet. The next time you’re outside, take a moment to dig in and discover the incredible world of soil.
