Exploring Urban Birds

4/10/2015

Kiddie Science was the recent recipient of a mini grant from Celebrate Urban Birds. This allowed us to present a free workshop at the Prospect Park Audubon Center during the recent spring break. The goal of the event was to learn about bird characteristics, explore their adaptations, create an art project, and conduct a bird survey in the park. It was a cloudy and chilly day, but that didn't keep science from happening! The turnout was really amazing and we thank you, our science families, for continuing to support our future scientists.

Our bird survey was conducted on the bridge directly across from the Audubon Center. We kept our eyes open for birds and carefully observed what they looked like. We were pleasantly surprised at how many birds we saw! After ten minutes, participating scientists received a tally sheet with the name and picture of the focal species and they checked off the birds they saw. Upon returning to the Audubon Center, we did a closing activity and participants received a certificate and an envelope of resources to continue the urban bird exploration at home.

We would like to thank Celebrate Urban Birds, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Prospect Park Alliance, and the Audubon Center. The success of this program would not have been possible without their support.

The results of our bird survey can be found below. Additional pictures from the workshop can be found on our Facebook page.
