In collaboration with Q Gardens, the Family Science program returns this summer with a focus on urban agriculture. Our goal is to engage families in building and caring for a vertical garden along the fence which will grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Our focus on urban agriculture will engage young scientists of all ages and their adult in a hands-on exploration of soil and compost, plant parts and leaf identification, companion planting, the water cycle, a garden ecosystem, and much more. We are currently raising funds to once again offer the Family Science program at no cost to participating families. |
The success of the Family Science program's inaugural year has motivated us to form collaborative relationships to further connect families with the science resources available locally. By partnering with Q Gardens, located in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, participating families will have access to local green space where they will be able to observe a portion of the food cycle as things progress from seed to harvest.
Your donation allows us to purchase the necessary materials for each family to build and care for a section of the gate-wide vertical garden. This includes fasteners, seeds/seedlings, towels and other gardening tools, materials for the irrigation system, netting, and other supplies. Additionally, participating families will receive custom Nature Journals and mini science kits to extend the scientific learning into the home environment.
The success of the Family Science program will be measured based on data from pre- and post- program surveys and program attendance/participation.
Our fundraising goal of $4,000 allows us to present this program at no cost to participants.
If we reach our goal, the Family Science program will run from July until the end of the growing season, in mid to late fall.
Thank you in advance for planting the seeds of science. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
