Kiddie Science At the Library

4/30/2025

Thank you for joining us at the Crown Heights Library for family-friendly, hands-on science fun! We had a fantastic time learning and exploring together. Best part, the ingredients and process are accessible and can be expanded on at home!
Our main ingredient, anthocyanin, is easily available in the supermarket via the leaves of the red cabbage. Delicious and nutritious, this leafy vegetable is also science! Anthocyanin works as an indicator, which changes color when mixed with a base (basic), or acid (acidic) ingredient. During our exploration at the library, we used baking soda and citric acid, also supermarket ingredients.

What other acids or bases can you safely explore with?

Don't have a pipette or dropper at home? You can use a spoon to scoop or drip-drop, or you can carefully pour your ingredients to mix them.

Special thanks to Con Edison for making this free science programming possible.
