Saving Water, One Day At A Time

4/18/2025

Water is one of the precious resources on or planet, but many of us use much more than we need without realizing it. Small changes in daily habits can add up to big savings for both the environment and your utility bill. As we focus on Earth Month, we explore impactful ways we can support and connect with our planet. Here are some ways:
Start by checking for leaks in faucets and pipes. A slow drip or lots of condensation collecting might not seem like much, but it can signal a bigger issue and can waste gallons of water over time. Do a quick check of your pipes and make sure things are ok.

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, lathering your hands, or scrubbing dishes can also make a big difference (we've all heard this one before).

Consider how you use water for household chores. Running full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine saves much more water than doing multiple small loads. If you hand-wash dishes, filling a basin instead of letting the water run continuously helps reduce waste.

Outside, if you have plants or a garden, watering early in the morning or later in the evening prevents evaporation and helps plants absorb more moisture. Collecting rainwater in a bucket or small barrel can be a great way to water plants naturally.

Encourage kids to track their water use by setting up a simple challenge. Have them time their showers and see if they can keep them under five minutes, or figure out how to measure how much water is saved by turning off the tap during brushing. Small changes like these help create lifelong habits that benefit the planet. It also connects you to the Scientific Method in fun new ways.
