Science Field Trips

Our hands-on science field trips continue on Zoom!

This month, we explored principles of flight and learned how to fold two specific types of airplanes (which we tested) with the Federal Aviation Administration. Our young scientists learned how wind works in flight and the forces that affect an airplane. We received tips and tricks on how to make our airplanes fly and then off we went! 

We compared and contrasted folding styles, flight duration and speed, and ease of use. We then decided which type of airplane worked best.

The fun didn't stop there! We embarked on an exploration of weather with NASA!

An educator from the Wallops Flight Facility guided us through a fun exploration on the "ingredients" of weather. We learned about pressure systems, air temperature, and how clouds are formed. In addition to observing some cool science demonstrations, we conducted a simple experiment to learn more about lightning. We also created a tool to measure weather, which can be used for real life data collection.

Although our exploration looks different, the scientific fun continues!
