Science Saturdays: Geology

3/9/2016

Our exploration began with the observation of various rocks which we then put into categories based on our own criteria. After each scientist shared how they chose to categorize their rocks, we discussed how scientists categorize them. After learning that rocks are either metamorphic, sedimentary, or igneous, we were able to properly categorize our rocks.

We then moved on to fossils, how they are formed, and the role that rocks play in it. We carefully observed some limestone that had fossils and their imprints. The students were fascinated by what they found. This then led us to create our own fossil impressions.

Next we moved on to our challenge. We needed to determine which rocks were made from calcium bicarbonate. We tested limestone, assorted pebbles, and chalk. We were very surprised by our results!
