STEM Opportunities for Young Scientists

There's lots of STEM-based activities available if you're a young scientist in New York City. Here are some-

NYC public school students in elementary through high school are invited to participate in STEM-based camps during the upcoming spring break.

Participants must be able to commit to the full week of camp, which takes place in April. The application deadline in Friday, March 11th.

Applications are now open for Google’s 2016 Computer Science Summer Institute and 2016 Generation Google Scholarship! The program is committed to addressing diversity in the field of computer science and is open to all qualified high school seniors who intend to major in computer science at a four year university in the US or Canada.

If you’re between the ages of 12 and 19, this event is for you! Its the 9th Annual CB14 Youth Conference. In 2008, Brooklyn Community Board 14 started the CB14 Youth Conference to help local teens find jobs, internships, and other opportunities within the communities of Flatbush, Midwood, parts of Kensington and beyond. Over the past eight years, thousands of teens have discovered their paths to success at the Brooklyn Community Board 14 Youth Conference.

In this 6- to 12-month program, teens ages 14 to 18 years old will learn computer skills in a two-week technology workshop over the summer, then complete a 6-month volunteering course at their local library, helping visitors to access the library’s computers and other technology resources. By the end of the program, students will complete about 20 hours of training in STEM-related skills.

Greet zoo visitors at exhibits, help with special events, and get community service hours as a Discovery Guide at the Prospect Park Zoo, a volunteer position open to teenagers and college students who may be interested in a career with animals. Volunteers are required to work from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. two days a week for the summer and are encouraged to complete 100 hours of community service at the zoo the following school year on weekends.

The Prospect Park Zoo offers another opportunity for teens. ​In this three-week summer internship, teenagers age 13 to 17 will learn the basics of zookeeping, conduct an animal behavior study and meet with staff of the Wildlife Conservation Society. The program runs from July 13 to 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
