Vertical Gardening

Thanks to a wonderful friend and neighbor, our young scientists turned these 2 liter bottles into a vertical garden with a reservoir and self irrigating feature.

As part of our exploration of urban agriculture and food science, our young scientists have been left in charge of what, how much, and where to plant. Our Home School Science group planted a vertical row of tomatoes, in mixed stages of development. 

The idea is for rainwater to collect in the main reservoir, which drips down the secondary one. This then drips into the irrigator, which saturates the soil all the way down the vertical line. Runoff from the last bottle will irrigate a complementary plant (currently its mint, but we'll let the young scientists decide on that once we explore companion planting).

We would like to thank our neighbors, friends, and community partners for supporting the growth of our garden. 

Our goal is to build at least 5 additional gardening columns using 2-liter soda bottles. Conveniently, our fence faces north, which gives us lots of growing options.  We can't wait to show you what we grow! Our garden exploration continues over the summer.
