Summer Science 2023 @ the Lab
Summers at the Kiddie Science Lab are all about gardening, science, art, and backyard chickens! Young scientists age 4 to 8 learn about and care for the Lab gardens, which includes fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs. We learn about urban chicken care through direct, hands-on experiences with our backyard hens. We expand our scientific vocabulary while participating in related projects and activities.
Summer Science at the Lab is an in-person drop-off program. This summer, masks will be optional at the Lab. Please provide water and a nut-free snack. Young scientists must be able to use the restroom unassisted. TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, & THURSDAYS 9:45am to 12pm |
Join us for one week or more of hands-on science fun! During each session, young scientists spend social time exploring Lab materials, assist with feeding our turtle Spaghetti, provide direct care to our gardens, spend time with the backyard chickens, explore science topics related to our exploration, and participate in creative arts activities that enhance our understanding of our topic.
Summer Science at the Lab meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:45am to 12pm.
The program fee of $195 per week includes all materials (sibling discount available).

Week 1: July 11th, 12th, & 13th
Diving Into Botany! When you look at a leaf, what do you see? Young scientists are introduced to the Kiddie Science Lab gardens and learn more about plant anatomy and function. We participate in plant-inspired art and take a closer look at the composition of soil. This week, participants will also pot a plant to care for at home. Week 3: July 25th, 26th, & 27th
The Brooklyn Chicken Club Learn about the needs of urban chickens through first hand experience with the Kiddie Science Lab flock! We focus on ornithology as we learn about bird anatomy, diet, behavior, and more! Become a chicken expert as we learn how to provide basic care, take a tour of the coop, prepare chicken snack, and create related art. Week 5: August 8th, 9th, & 10th
Geology and Paleontology The ground beneath our feet holds many clues about our planet! This week, we dive into an exploration of rocks, minerals, and fossils! We make observations, comparisons, and conduct excavations. Young scientists create related art and take home specimens for further exploration. |
Week 2: July 18th, 19th, & 20th
Crazy Cool Chemistry Join us as we explore fizzy, bubbly, and colorful concoctions as we learn more about chemistry and chemical reactions. Young scientists explore the role chemistry plays in our everyday life and learn how we can use this knowledge to create unique works of art. Week 4: August 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Invertebrate Biology Invertebrates are an important part of the Lab ecology and they play important roles! We learn about invertebrate anatomy, what and how they eat, and the different types than can be found at the Lab! Composting worms, garden snails, bees, and more! Week 6: August 15th, 16th, & 17th Slime Time! Matter makes up our entire world. This week, young scientists learn about the states of matter and focus on one type in particular: slime. Semisolid, non-Newtonian substance, polymers... so many names for slime! We compare and contrast characteristics as we explore various ingredients and mixtures. |
**NEWLY ADDED DATES**
Week 7: August 22nd, 23rd, & 24th
Science + Art = STEAM
When science and art combine, anything is possible! We explore color science and learn more about secondary and tertiary colors. We use science to create unique art creations that expose young scientists to vocabulary and related concepts.
