Spicy Mildred and Rocky continue to greatly enjoy their time with our young scientists. We've been able to observe a lot of behaviors and vocalizations, and Spicy has gotten really comfortable with being gently touched by our young scientists. We've been enjoying our responsibility of caring for and being around the living things at the Lab.
This week, our young scientists learned more about pollinators and the important role they play in our garden and beyond. We identified basic parts of invertebrates and learned more about more commonly ones found here in Brooklyn. Our young scientists focused on invertebrate characteristics such as symmetry and anatomy. We combined science and art then added a bit of creativity as we became busy bees pollinating the garden. This week, we focused on botany and learned about the growing cycle of our garden. Young scientists explored dill and were able to observe and harvest its seeds. We learned that most of the Lab garden plants come from seeds harvested from previous year's gardens. Garden care has been the highlight of our morning, with young scientists carefully peeking under leaves to see which garden goodies are ready for harvest.
Our young scientists made herb greenhouses to care for at home, which extends the learning well outside our walls. In addition to our exploration, we also cared for and spent time with the Lab turtle, Spaghetti, and our backyard hens. We even got to hold a freshly laid egg and marveled at how it was still warm! We've waited a very long time for this moment and its finally here! This week, we reopened the Lab doors for in-person programming during our Summer Science program. Our small group of young scientists re-acquainted themselves to the Lab space while providing care for the animals and the garden plants. We learned about the composition of soil, explored the composting system and the worms that work there, and harvested food grown in our front garden.
July was a fun and busy month at the Kiddie Science Lab, with our young scientists diving into a hands-on science exploration that included botany, biology, chemistry, and more! We cared for the garden and harvested yummy food. We observed the Lab turtle, Spaghetti, to learn more about her needs and behavior. We spent time with the backyard chickens, Sweet and Sour, and made lots of observations about their behavior and vocalizations.
We learned scientific vocabulary associated with our topic of exploration, and made relevant connections to art which allowed our young scientists to get creative while learning important scientific facts. We got messy, laughed a lot, and explored serious questions such as 'what happens when our water gets polluted?'. We recycled newspaper and turned it into new paper, we learned about the water cycle and created simple filters. We learned the characteristics of invertebrates and the role they pay in our garden. We conducted chemistry experiments using grocery store ingredients and at one point harvested so many cucumbers each young scientist in the program got to take one home. The first half of our science summer was incredibly fun and we can't wait to continue the scientific exploration. See you soon at the Kiddie Science Lab!
