This is before:
The new growing season is being welcomed in by new raised garden beds! Our old garden beds were removed and new garden beds were custom built in their place. Modifications have been made to ensure more efficient growing. In addition to the front garden area, we added two new garden beds in the backyard too! This is before: This is after. We can't wait to learn and grow with you! Brace yourselves, because this will blow you away!
Overnight temperatures are getting cooler, so we recently harvested the remaining eggplant that was edible. The herbs that are currently outside will be making their transition to indoor growing this week. We weighed the eggplant for a grand harvest total of SIXTY NINE pounds!!! We cheered, we celebrated, and delighted in our successful growing season. Until spring returns! It was a moment that received a hearty applause and cheers. This week, we officially harvested SIXTY pounds of edible, kid-grown food from our front garden planters. It's a harvest total that surpasses our most successful growing season by almost twenty pounds.
And we're not done growing yet! We've begun planting for our fall garden, which will include beans and leafy greens such as kale, chard, and spinach. See and learn more about how our garden grows through out the years. It's officially fall, but the garden growing season continues! Our young scientists continue to provide care to our garden and harvest delicious goodies. Although some of our plants are reaching the end of their life cycle, the eggplant, for example, is producing more fruit now than previously. To date, we have harvested FIFTY-NINE pounds of food grown within the front Lab garden. The harvested food has been enjoyed by registered program participants, our turtle Spaghetti, and the chickens. It's our very own self sustaining microfarm!
This growing season began while our doors were still closed. We planted conservatively, not knowing what the summer would bring.
Despite the world still being in the midst of an active pandemic, life in our garden continued on. With several weeks still remaining in the 2021 growing season, we've thus far harvested forty pounds of food, all within our front garden planters here at the Kiddie Science Lab. |
