What's Growing in the garden: eggplant

The eggplant is a fruit (it has seeds inside) that grows primarily in late summer to mid-autumn. The eggplant is closely related to the tomato and potato. Eggplants are made up of 95% water. They have numerous small seeds which are edible, but have a sour taste. In some parts of the world, eggplants are known as brinjal.

Fruit of eggplant belongs to the family group of berries.

Some varieties of eggplant can be white, lavender, green, or red-striped. This fruit can be elongated, rounded, or pea-shaped.

The name eggplant comes from India, where at the time, a small, white, egg-like variety of the vegetable was all the rage. The plant is native to southern India.
