It all starts with a seed! For this final week of Summer Science, young scientists spent time learning more about seeds. We observed seed characteristics, made comparisons, and became seed detectives as we learned more about how the Lab garden begins each year. We learned more about the life cycle of plants and made careful observations about the seeds growing in our garden. Young scientists harvested seeds from garden plants (cucumber and eggplant), which will be saved and planted for next growing season. Not all gardens grow in soil! This week, our young scientists learned more about the Lab hydroponic system and explored alternative growing materials. We compared and contrasted characteristics on what makes a good non-soil growing medium. We also planted seeds in a vial to care for and observe at home.
The recent rains provided a perfect opportunity to explore our topic more in depth. What do plants need in water? With our garden soil still damp, it was a perfect opportunity to provide the plants with additional nutrients. The water we provided to our garden plants came with the additional boost of plant food. This growing season began while our doors were still closed. We planted conservatively, not knowing what the summer would bring.
Despite the world still being in the midst of an active pandemic, life in our garden continued on. With several weeks still remaining in the 2021 growing season, we've thus far harvested forty pounds of food, all within our front garden planters here at the Kiddie Science Lab. We explored leaves and their characteristics this week. Young scientists enjoyed a leaf scavenger hunt in our garden where they identified the softest, biggest, smallest, and bumpiest leaves. We enjoyed comparing and contrasting features as we learned more about leaf anatomy. We combined science and art as we made leaf rubbings which helped review what we learned. We also spent time with the backyard chickens and helped care for Spaghetti. It was another week of hands-on science fun!
We're creeping up to almost THIRTY pounds of harvested food from our front raised garden beds! We've been very excited watching the numbers grow, and are more committed than ever to continuing to provide our garden with love and care.
