Our second meeting of the Brooklyn Chicken Club introduced us to chicken nutrition and the importance of providing certain ingredients to our backyard hens. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they are plant and meat-eaters. A chicken diet (what it eats) that includes fresh fruits and vegetables is important to their health. Today we focused on what our chickens eat and why. Since they don't have teeth, chickens need to consume grit, small pieces of rock that helps break up the food they eat.
In addition to feeding the hens, we also raked the soil, added hay to the coop for extra insulation, collected eggs, and spent time hanging out with Sweet and Sour.
