Chromatography is the process of separating something using a liquid. For this experiment, we will separate different candies into their original colors to explore the dyes they're made from.
BASIC MATERIALS:
Shallow dish, paper towels, water, assorted candies (peppermints, candy canes, candies of assorted colors). Optional: coffee filter paper, paper and pencil to record observations.

EXPERIMENT #1: CANDY COLOR RAINBOW
Fill a show dish with enough water to cover the bottom. Place 3-5 candies in the dish. Observe what happens after 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes. This experiment is particularly fun with hard candies, as they are known for their bright colors.
EXPERIMENT #2: CHROMATOGRAPHY ART
Place a paper towel flat on a surface. Fill the shallow bowl with warm water. Place a candy in the water for five seconds. Remove it and place it directly on the paper towel. Repeat with as many candies as you wish. Observe what happens as the candy dyes spread onto the paper. You can repeat this experiment using coffee filters and other types of paper products. Remove the candy and let the paper dry for some cool science art.
