Located toward the eastern side of Puerto Rico, El Yunque is the only tropical rain forest within the US National Forest system. Up to 240 inches of annual rainfall create a lush forest with incredible biological diversity, some of which is exclusive to this location. In addition to the many sights and sounds this forest has to offer, there is also a rich history here.
Formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest, El Yunque got its name from the Indian spirit Yuquiye, which means "Forest of Clouds". With most of the forest on a mountain, even below the highest point of 3,461 feet, its easy to feel as though you can reach up and touch a cloud.
Over 240 species of trees and plants make their home in El Yunque. Approximately 26 of these are found nowhere else, making them endemic to this specific area. In addition to trees, and plants, several rare animals make their home here as well. The Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vitatta), is one example. Where once they filled the rain forest, this bird is currently threatened and active conservation efforts are the only chance to rebuild the population.
