Brooklyn is finally seeing better temperatures following a dangerously frigid couple of days during the holiday weekend. In case you were worried about the Kiddie Science Lab chickens during the recent polar freeze. They're fine! Now that it's 20 degrees and "warm" enough for their human caregiver to be outside for a bit longer, we took a video.
During the super cold two days, when the wind chill was in the negatives, the hens were checked up on more than usual and their liquid water source replenished as needed. The coop was cleaned more than usual as well, to keep air moisture at an absolute minimum. This helps prevent frostbite to the chickens' combs and wattles.
A few weeks ago we got their outdoor area ready for winter and the timing was perfect! It blocks out all wind and takes the edge off the cold. Our hens have finished molting, so they're facing the cold with brand new feathers. You can see our winter set-up below and then check out a chicken video.
