As the month of thanks rolls around, I want to personally thank you for your incredible support during these unique times. I'm well aware that the Kiddie Science Lab is one of the few places that still requires masks. I want to thank you and your children for adhering to this rule and modeling what it looks like to apply science to real life situations.
None of this is ideal, and I wish our reality were different. In the spirit of science and transparency, I want to share with you exactly why we will continue to require masks at the Lab for the foreseeable future.
As our programs continue to grow, we are seeing almost 100 students per week at the Lab. This is still a fraction of our usual group size. This group is incredibly diverse, in every sense of the word.
We all know much too well how quickly one can go from feeling just fine, to not very well at all. We've experienced this firsthand with students and staff at the Lab. It happens, and despite our best efforts to remain attune to our bodies, germs have a way of sneaking up on us when we least expect it. It's what they're good at.
Requiring masks at the Lab is a tool that allows us to continue to present fun, engaging science workshops with as little interruption as possible while remaining inclusive and equitable. With the winter months approaching, it is our intention to double down on what we've learned and apply the tools we have.
This means that:
- masks will continue to be required when inside the Lab. We can provide you/your child(ren) with masks as needed.
- we encourage you to continue communicating with us if you think your child might be out. We're in this together!
- if there is a covid positive individual in the household, student(s) or staff is/are required to rapid test the morning of the workshop. If negative, we look forward to seeing your child! If positive, we'll see you the following week!
- Kiddie Science can provide your family with as many free rapid covid tests as needed. As a nonprofit science organization we receive free test kits for the community. If masks are needed, we can arrange to get those as well.
I want to thank you for bringing joy back into the walls of the Kiddie Science Lab. There was a time where I mourned the end of it all, and here we are having renewed our commercial lease for another five years.
Cheers to science, teamwork, and YOU!
With love and appreciation,
Ms. Carmen
